Sporting B beat Leixões 3-1

Sporting B tallied yet another II Liga win this Wednesday afternoon, this time with a 3-1 victory over the visiting Leixões. The result moves Sporting up into second overall, while attention turns to Mauro Riquicho, who was stretchered off in the second-half.

Motivated by the thrashing of Oriental at the weekend, João de Deus’ side burst out of the blocks at half-time and after nine minutes were already two goals up, courtesy of Sambinha and Domingos Duarte. Despite the team from Alvalade completely dominating the park, Leixões did manage to pull a goal back just before the half-hour mark through Diogo Nunes.

The second-half saw Diogo Salomão get a run out as the pace slowed and the afternoon looked to be heading for an troubled conclusion, until the 66th minute injury to Mauro Riquicho left both sides looking concerned for the younger.

Cristian Ponde had a pair of chances on the 69th and 72nd minute to extend the lead, before Sambinha was shown a straight red for aggression 13 minutes from the whistle. The result was secure, but there was still time for an 89th minute strike from Ponde to round off the result.

Matheus, Geraldes, Gauld and Zezinho on target in Sporting B win

Sporting claimed a third win of the II Liga campaign this weekend, with a dominating performance against Oriental.

It was actually Oriental who made the stronger start and the hosts smartly went about building some early chances, however it wasn’t long before Sporting took control of the encounter and after just 6 minutes, Rafael Barbosa set up Matheus Pereira for the game’s opener. Ponde could have extended the lead on two occasions, but his first attempt was saved by the Oriental keeper and his second ended up wide.

Geraldes was next to threaten, but his 27th minute shot from range fished up on the wrong side of the post. Oriental had a dominating spell on the half-hour mark and did manage to hold down long spells of possession, but, with the exception of a 39th minute header against the post, Sporting B looked unlikely to concede nan equaliser.

The action was soon back down the other end and and King threw a well-placed cross into the box that Francisco Geraldes linked up with to double Sporting B’s lead.

The second-half got underway with three good chances for Oriental: firstly Fernando set up Firmino for a header that was put wide, before Daniel Almeida did the same thing after a free-kick and Peter also missed the target at the far post. Down the other end, Ryan Gauld essentially guaranteed the three points with a shot across goal after some good played by Podence down the right.

Oriental continued to search for a consolation late on, before Zezinho collected a loose ball to net Sporting B’s fourth.

Sporting B coach with the press after Portimonense draw

“Portimonense were better than us in the first-half”, conceded João de Deus in a post-match press conference this Sunday, after his side’s 1-1 draw in II Liga matchday five.

“We were apathetic at the start and we we let them play. The second-half was different. We changed what we had to and scoring early helped. We could have won, if it wasn’t for the sending off. It is this kind of match that helps the lads to grow. We wanted to win, but the sending off changed everything and we had to hold out”, said the Sporting B coach, adding: “Portimonense are a strong side who can move the ball around well. We played in midweek as well and they didn’t, which made a difference in the first-half, but we fought back.”

Deus' side held to draw on II Liga matchday five

Sporting B were held to a 1-1 draw at the Sporting Academy by the visiting Portimonense this Sunday afternoon, on II Liga matchday five.

The opening stages were end to end stuff, before Matheus had the first real chance of the afternoon, but his fourth minute shot was saved by Ricardo Ferreira. The opportunity proved to be the warning shot for what was long spells of dominating possession for the team from Alvalade, with Portimonense very rarely getting forward. However, the visitors were having a better time of it in defence, smothering most of Sporting B’s efforts to pull ahead while still in the build-up.

Despite Sporting B’s dominance, it was actually the side from the Algarve who took the led courtesy of a free-kick driven in by Mamadu in the 25th minute. It didn’t take João de Deus long to react and on 36 minutes the Sporting B coach made his first change, bringing off Dramé for Francisco Geraldes and pushing Matheus out to the left. The alteration did just the trick and Sporting B again took a grip of proceedings, but a goal was proving hard to come by and Portimonense took a 1-0 lead in at half-time.

With the wind in the favour, Sporting B come out stronger after the break and soon levelled, with Matheus Pereira finishing off a move instigated by Rubio and Geraldes. On 54 minutes Bruno Paulista could have had his first goal in Sporting shirt, but the newly arrived signing’s free-kick was parried over for a corner.

Sporting B were reduced to 10 men in the 72nd minute, when Bruno Paulista was shown a second yellow card that really didn’t do justice to the Brazilian’s solid performance. To rebalance his side, João de Deus brought off Diego Rubio for Ryan Gauld, as time played out to split the points at the final whistle.
