Alvalade boss celebrates his 500th match in the top division
Jorge Jesus reached the fitting milestone of 500 matches at the top level of Portuguese football recently and the National Association of Football Coaches made the most of the occasion. Meanwhile the Alvalade coach took the opportunity to talk about the success of his profession.
"You need a real passion for football, regardless of what division. From that it is your capacity that dictates which way your career goes, but it is passion that helps you reach your objectives. I coach is a creator, that is how I have taught myself. No book can teach you how to win the league", said Jesus.
Speaking about the methods employed in the modern game, Jesus looked to the example of his time as a player in 1977/1978. "Today, the way we train is completely different. One my my coaches, called Ferreirinha, would have us playing football with a tennis ball every day. We used small goals and played five-a-side. Looking back at that today as a coach, of course I would say it is good for bringing quality to the team, but I am not sure it contributes to performance. I still play it sometimes, because it makes the lads think on their feet and of course I use some things I learnt from other coaches."
