Judoka beats world number 1 but comes up short of medal positions
Jorge Fonseca finished the Düsseldorf Grand Prix <100kg competition in a brilliant fifth place this weekend, after missing out to the Iranian Javad Mahjoub in the bronze medal fight.
The Alvalade judoka opened his campaign with a win over Danilo Pantic, before getting the better of Beka Gviniashvili. Next up was a duel with the world number 1, Elmar Gasimov, seeing Fonseca claim one of the best scalps of his career after five and a half minutes of aciton.
In the semi-final, Fonseca lost out to world number 12 Jose Armenteros and world number 31 Javad Mahjoub.
Taciana Lima and Sergiu Oleinic also took part in the competition, with the athlete from Guinea Bissau eliminated in the qualification round and the Portuguese-Moldovan finishing 9th.
