Sebastián Coates happy with his new Alvalade deal

"A lot things were said, but I always wanted to play for Sporting CP", said Sebastián Coates after completing a permanent move to Alvalade this week.

Speaking with Sporting Journal, the Uruguayan proved overjoyed with the deal: "I am really happy with this opportunity. It was something I was looking to do when I arrived here, convincing the club to do this. I want to win a lot of titles here. This is a great club, with a lot of history. I will do my best to reach our objectives."

Sporting Clube de Portugal – Futebol, SAD has reached an agreement with Sebastián Coates and activated the club's purchase option with Sunderland AFC for the transfer of the player. Sebastián Coates has agreed a contract valid until 2022, with a buy-out clause of 45,000,000.00€.

Five Alvalade stars given international call ups

Costa Rica, Uruguay, Netherlands and Serbia all call on Sporting stars

Sporting's Costa Rican double Bryan Ruiz and Joel Campbell have both been called up for their country's friendly against Russia.

Meanwhile, Sebastián Coates features in the Uruguay squad for a 7th of October and 11 of October World Cup Qualifiers with Venezuela and Colombia respectively.

Serbia have called up Markovic for the matches against Moldova and Austria.

Finally, Bas Dost is in the Dutch preliminary squad list against Belarus on the 7th of October and against France on the 10th of October.

Coates looks ahead to Wednesday's visit to Real Madrid

Sebastián Coates was the player chosen to share his thoughts on Wednesday's visit to the European Champions in Sporting's return to the Champions League.

"Real Madrid are a great team and we will have to be focused and try to play to our strengths. We will see how it goes, but we will try to play our game. It doesn't matter who plays, we are all ready. I think we just have to take this competition one game at a time. We are going through a good spell now and we are full of confidence, so we will try and show that tomorrow", said the Uruguayan.

Alvalade defender features in squad of 23

The Uruguayan national coach, Óscar Washington Tabárez, has named Sebastián Coates in his squad of 23 for the coming Copa America Centenario 2016, to be played in the United States from the 3rd to the 26th of June.

The Alvalade defender, who recently extended his stay with the club, will join up with other stars playing in Europe's big leagues such as Luis Suárez (Barcelona), Edinson Cavani (Paris Saint Germain) and Diego Godín (Atlético Madrid).

Sporting has extended its loan with the player Sebastián Coates.

Official statement: 

"Sporting Clube de Portugal, Futebol, SAD has reached an agreement with Sunderland AFC for the athlete Sebastián Coates for the extension of his loan until the end of the 2016/2017 season. Sporting SAD wishes Sebastián Coates the best of professional and personal success".

Coates arrived at Alvalade in the January transfer window and has played a crucial role at the heart of the Sporting defence, featuring 12 times already in Liga NOS and Europa League matches.

Sebastián Coates on Sporting's win against União da Madeira

Sebastián Coates was once again the bedrock at the heart of the Sporting defence this weekend, contributing with another cleansheet in what is one of the tightest title for Sporting races in recent years.

“We scored two quick goals and it was a fair win. We knew we had to win, to stay in the fight for first play. It was important for us to qualify directly for the Champions League too and that was one of our objectives. We aren't thinking about Rio Ave-Benfica and all we have to focus on are our matches", said the South American at the final whistle, going on to comment on the recent praise in his direction from president Bruno de Carvalho: "Thinks like that make me happy and I just have to carry on putting the work in. I am satisfied here and focused on the end of the season."

Alvalade defender to face Brazil and Peru in World Cup qualifiers

The Sporting centre-back Sebastián Coates has been included in the Uruguayan national squad for two World Cup qualifiers against Brazil and Peru.

The first encounter will take place in Arena Pernambuco on March the 25th, before Uruguay face Peru in home soil on the 29th of March.

Coates looks ahead to hosting of Bayer Leverkusen

While accepting that Sporting face a tough challenge in the form of Bayer Leverkusen in the Europa League last-31 this Thursday, Sebastián Coates guarantees that his side will do everything to move into the next round.

"We are prepared for the match. It is going to be really hard, but we will try and win so that we can go to Germany a bit calmer. Bayer are a really strong team, basically across their whole team, but I think that we are in good form and we can take advantage of that", opened the centre-back, going on to respond to a question on Sporting's chances of winning the competition: "Of course I think we can win it, but we will see tomorrow and in Germany. We have a good team and we will do everything we can to get into the next round. We have a tough opponent in front of us, but we will put the work in."

Coates finished with a reflection of his arrival at Alvalade: "Since arriving, everyone has treated be really good: my teammates, the coach and the president. I am really happy. There are some good defenders here, like Naldo, Ewerton, Tobias and Ruben Semedo and I am here to learn and to add my experience to the group.”

Sebastián Coates following his Sporting debut

Sebastián Coates was the big surprise in the Sporting line-up this Monday night. The Uruguayan looked solid at the heart of the Alvalade defence, with just the three points missing at the final whistle.

“We wanted to win, but we are still at the top and everything is still in our hands. We aren't feeling pressure, because we are only thinking about what we have to do. Personally I felt good, but I am part of a group that likes to win. Of course I am here to win the title. I am not happy with the draw, but we are still at the top", said the defender at the final whistle.
