Sporting swimmer finishes 45th in 100m freestyle competition

Igor Mogne's time of 50.65s was enough to the second elimination round of the 100m freestyle swimming competition this week in Rio, but was just short of qualification for the semi-finals.

The Sporting swimmer finished in 45th in the overall rankings.

Alexis Santos overjoyed with new national record

Alexis Santos shaved 46 hundredths of a second off the previous 400m medley record this week in Rio de Janeiro.

"It was the start I was dreaming of. I came here to beat my time from 2013 and I knew I could do it", said the Sporting swimmer in the press area at the Rio de Janeiro Aquatic Park, going on to reflect on his 14th place finish in a field of 27: "The hardest part is done. I know now that I am in my best form and I want to make the most of it."

Alexis Santos will next be in action on Thursday, in the 200m medley competition.

Alvalade swimmer second in Canet en Roussillon Meeting

Alexis Santos claimed the silver medal in the 200m medley at the Canet en Roussillon Meeting (France) this Thursday, after finishing just behind the Japanese swimmer, Kosuke Hagino.

The Alvalade swimmer had already won the B Final of the 50m backstroke earlier in the day.

Alvalade swimmer this time swimming in the 400m medley after mid-week bronze medal

The spotlight was certainly on Alexis Santos for this weekend's 400m medley in the European Swimming Championships, following the Sporting athlete's bronze medal in the 200m event earlier this week.

Santos was unable to repeat his podium finish, but did notch up an admirable time of 4m19s82 to finish just one place short of the final.

Alvalade swimmer becomes just second Portuguese swimmer to earn a medal

Alexis Santos became just the second Portuguese swimmer in history to win a European Championships medal this week, with a fantastic swim in the 200m medley to claim the bronze. The first medal was won back in 1985 by Alexandre Yokochi in the 200m breastroke.

The Alvalade athlete recovered brilliantly in the final stages of the race to snatch the last podium spot with a personal best of 1m59s76.

 

João Vital beats national 400m medley junior record

Alvalade swimmer wins Flanders Cup race with new record

João Vital made history in the Flanders Cup this afternoon, beating the national junior 400m medley record with a time of 4:25.52 and in the process statching the title set in 2010 from Alexis Santos (4:26.40, in Coimbra). The time was enough for Vital to win goal, ahead of the Brit Tristan Slater (4:25.94).

João Vital's and Alexis Santos' Flanders Cup results in full:

- 400m medley (João Vital): 1st place A Final - 4:25.52

- 50m backstroke (Alexis Santos): 5th place A Final - 26.47

- 100m backstroke (Alexis Santos): 8th place A Final - 58.23

Alexis reaches A Final in Flanders Cup

Alvalade swimmer in action in Antwerp

Alexis Santos claimed an impressive 8th place finish in the 100m backstroke event in the Flanders Cup this weekend, in an event attended by a total of 22 Portuguese swimmers.

The Alvalade swimmer finished the final in a time of 58.23 to finish 8th. Santos also took part in the 200m breast stroke (finishing 12th), while fellow Sporting athlete João Vital finished 28th.

Sporting swimmer sets new 200m backstroke personal best

Alexis Santos was in brilliant form this weekend in the French Club Championship, representing Stade Français Olympique Courbevoie in three events.

In the 200m backstroke, Santos set a new personal best of 1:56.14 to finish in second overall.

The Sporting swimmer has already guaranteed his place at the Rio Olympic Games.

Madeira Islands – International Swim Marathon II held this weekend

Mário Bonança finished the Madeira Islands – International Swim Marathon II in an impressive 11th place this weekend, in a competition which is part of the European Open Water Swimming Cup.

The competition was won by the Brit Tobias Robison with a time of 1:59:35.29, with Bonança finishing as the 7th best Portuguese swimmer with a time of 2:08:53.32.
