Gelson Martins scores twice in 5-0 win

Gelson Martins repaid Jorge Jesus' confidence with a brilliant showing in Sporting's 5-0 thrashing of V. Setúbal this Saturday, in the last home game of the Liga NOS campaign.

"We started well and controlled the game from the start. We scored and that helps the team", said the youngster in an interview with radio journalists at the final whistle, adding a comment on his place in the starting line-up: "I am happy. Every player trains so that they can make the most of opportunities and that is what I did. We have done our bit and now we will wait and see."

Sporting CP with two names in Sports Journalist Association list

João Mário and Adrien are included in a list of five players shortlisted for the Sports Journalist Association's 2016 Player of the Year Award. Also in the running are André André, Jonas and Rafa.

Sporting CP also had two players in the list for Revelation of the Year, namely Gelson Martins and the on-loan Iuri Medeiros. In the list for Ledman LigaPro player of the year, Sporting B's Francisco Geraldes is in the running along side André Silva, Ewerton, Pedrinho and Platiny.

Voting will take place on the 29th of April, with winners announced on the 2nd of May.

Gelson Martins' reaction after his first goal in Alvalade

Gelson Martins was back on Jorge Jesus' team sheet this Sunday, this time putting in an instrumental performance in his side's 3-1 win against Moreirense. Speaking at the final whistle, the young winger proved happy with having contributed with the first goal of the evening.

“It was an important win. We played well, we scored early and we got our seventh consecutive win. It was my first goal in Alvalade and hopefully I can contribute with more", said Gelson Martins, before speaking about the coming Portuguese Cup encounter with Braga and the league meeting with FC Porto come the new year: "We always play to win, against FC Porto or any other team. The team is feeling confident right now for our next game against Sp. Braga and we will go for win."

Gelson Martins and Bryan Ruiz on Thursday's Europa League win

"We kept looking for the win. We fell behind but we showed character and we didn't give up", is how Gelson summed up his side's 3-1 win against Besiktas in the Europa League on Thursday night.

Bryan Ruiz was also on hand to share his thoughts on the win. "It wasn't an easy game. Besiktas are a great side, but we knew we had to win tonight. It was made that bit harder when we conceded, but we carried on working and we are really happy right now", said the Costa Rican at the final whistle, adding: "We have some tough matches coming up in the league and the cup. We are hoping for another win on Sunday and we will push on from there."

Alvalade attacking duo named after clinical showing in Russia

Gelson Martins and Montero both feature in the UEFA Team of the Week for Europa League Matchday 5, after helping Sporting to a 4-2 win against Lokomotiv Moscow.

The Colombian also scooped the Player of the Week award for his goal and two assists in the Russian capital.

Tobias, Gelson, Carlos Mané, Ruben Semedo and Iuri called up by Rui Jorge

Rui Jorge has included a total of five Sporting players in his squad for the coming under-21 European Championship qualifiers against Albania on the 12th of November and Israel on the 17th.

Tobias Figueiredo, Carlos Mané, Gelson Martins, Ruben Semedo and Iuri Medeiros (who has spent the last two seasons out on loan with V. Setúbal and Moreirense) are the five included in the squad of 23.

Portugal to face Hungary and Greece in Euro qualification

Rui Jorge has included Tobias Figueiredo and Gelson Martins in his under-21 side, along with the on loan Sporting player Iuri Medeiros.

The 23 called up are: André Moreira, Bruno Varela, Rui Silva; Edgar Ié, Fábio Cardoso, João Cancelo, Rafa Soares, Nurio, Rebocho, Ruben Vezo, Tobias Figueiredo; Bruno Fernandes, Francisco Ramos, Rony Lopes, Raphael Guzzo, Ruben Neves, Tomás Podstawski; Bruma, Gelson Martins, Gonçalo Paciência, Gonçalo Guedes, Iuri Medeiros and Ricardo Horta.

Speaking after releasing his squad list, Rui Jorge took the opportunity to speak about Mauro Riquicho, who would certainly have featured if it were not for a serious injury: “We were counting on having him with us and we all wish him the best. I won’t wish him a quick recover, because that kind of injury needs time and the important thing is that he is okay.”

Portugal will host Hungary on the 8th of October in Penafiel’s 25 de Abril Municipal Stadium, before travelling to Greece for a 16h30 kick off on the 13th.
